The Saltire Room at Gracemount Primary

On Friday 28th November 2025, Saltire Roofing & Building was proud to officially open “The Saltire Room” at Gracemount Primary School.

Saltire donated £3,000 to Cash for Kids Edinburgh to fully fund this amazing new sensory facility for the school.

Ian Murray MP for Edinburgh South also attended to catch a first glimpse of The Saltire Room as it was unveiled to pupils for the very first time.

44% of the pupils at Gracemount Primary have a recorded Additional Support Need and this new room will offer these children a calm and safe space when they are experiencing sensory overload, stress or anxiety within the classroom.

The school had previously been using a make-shift space that wasn’t fit for purpose or able to accommodate the increasing need for sensory and ASN support.

They applied to Cash for Kids for £3,000 to fully equip a new space with the right resources including a tunnel, special lighting and a vibrating couch!

As a former pupil of Gracemount Primary and a huge supporter of Cash for Kids, Saltire’s Managing Director Steven McIntosh immediately recognised the need and stepped forward to deliver this project as a community benefit that would have a truly significant impact.

Steven said:

“As a company, Saltire prides itself on giving back to local communities, and this particular project is of great personal significance too. As a former pupil of Gracemount, I’m delighted to be able to deliver something that will support local children and create a lasting impact for this school. If we can make a difference and change just one life, then it’s all been worthwhile.”

Gracemount Primary Headteacher Lesley Boyd said:

“Thank you to Saltire Roofing & Building for providing the funding for our fabulous new sensory room. This facility will allow our learners to have a safe space to explore and process sensory information, whilst managing their emotions and reducing stress and anxiety. The calming environment can improve concentration and helps children to learn to self and co-regulate their emotions. It also provides the opportunity to enhance fine and gross motor skills through interactive sensory activities.”

Ian Murray, MP for Edinburgh South said:

“The room is brilliant and will make such a difference to all the children at the school. I even got to try out the vibrating sofa! It’s fantastic to see businesses like Saltire Roofing & Building giving back to the community by supporting this initiative and many others in partnership with Cash for Kids. A huge thank you to them, the school team and everyone involved.”
