Saltire has stepped up its support for a Berwickshire school breakfast club as families continue to struggle with the rising cost of living. Eyemouth Primary has noticed a significant increase in the number of children attending their breakfast club as the increase in household bills has put parents under pressure.
The school recently applied to Cash for Kids for help with funding and the charity approached Saltire for corporate support. Having helped Eyemouth Primary in the past, Saltire immediately donated £1,500 to keep the club running until the summer holidays.
The breakfast club is operated and funded by the school and is open to pupils from P1 – P7, Monday to Friday and is delivered by two members of staff. It offers a healthy nutritious breakfast of cereals, toast and fruit. The club also supports the children’s attendance, ensuring they get the best start to their day. It allows pupils to be prepared and ready to start lessons in the class and help improve their concentration levels, also encouraging positive relationships with their peers.
Since starting the breakfast club, parents have noticed their children are more engaged to come to school in the morning, which as reduced stress and anxiety for them all. They are also very grateful that their children are provided with a nutritious breakfast and feel this has helped reduce their weekly shopping bills.
Headteacher Christopher Reid said:
“The funding from Saltire Roofing & Building via Cash for Kids has secured the breakfast club to continue which has encouraged children to attend and provide them with a healthy breakfast Monday-Friday. This provision is so important to the wellbeing of the children and helps reduce food poverty for young children who attend Eyemouth Primary School. With rising food costs, the school has seen an increase of numbers attending the breakfast club over the recent months and feels this provision continues to support families through difficult times.”
